#16: Influencers as Tech Founders: Real Monetization at Last
It used to be that social media made the careers of influencers. Now David Dobrik is launching Dispo, and we’re seeing influencers make their own social media platforms.
Traditionally, influencers sell merch, start beverage companies, appear on TV, endorse products, do book deals, and so on. These things make money, but they’re selling their brands for pennies on the dollar. They’re five- or six-figure deals when the full potential of their followings is worth hundreds of millions. Dobrik is starting a tech company, and it might turn him into a billionaire. We’ll see more influencers start tech companies and chase high-upside, high-multiple opportunities to monetize their followers.
